Harding Falls to NCS in Season Opener

Corby Lucas
The Harding Generals opened up the 2017 season with a trip to Nashville Christian School to face a veteran team with 21 eighth graders on its roster. After falling behind early, the Generals fought back to a two score deficit at halftime, but were unable to close the gap further and eventually fell by a score of 42-20.

NCS scored three times to open the game and Harding fell behind early, 20-0. The Generals were able to move the ball on several offensive possessions but were unable to sustain drives before finally moving down the field and scoring on a touchdown pass from Ryan Schmadtke '18 to Sam Frank '19. After another NCS touchdown, Harding's Jordan Turner '18 (USN) returned the kickoff 80 yards for a score as the clock ticked to :00 at the half. Schmadtke converted the extra point for a 26-13 halftime deficit. In the second half, NCS put up two more scores and Harding had one final touchdown run from Turner who gave a phenomenal effort breaking 4 tackles on his way to the endzone. Previously in the same offensive series, Harding had a touchdown connection from Schmadtke to Parker Wainwright '18 negated by a penalty.

Andrew Romito '18 (Overbrook) ran the ball hard from his fullback position the entire game and Harding continued to battle against a much bigger team with almost twice as many players.

Harding returns to action in its first home game of the year on Thursday, Aug. 31 at 4:30pm. Come out and support the team, Go Generals!!
