Varsity Girls Basketball Loses Rough Road Contest

Coach Chris Holleman
Playing before a partisan crowd and in a rough and tumble game, the Varsity Girls Basketball team lost a tough road contest to Christ the King 28-20.
In a rough game where the line between no-calls, jump balls and fouls was blurry, if not a moving target, the Generals struggled with adjusting to the aggressive and physical play of the Lady Raiders.  The two teams went back and forth in the first quarter, with Christ the King taking a 14-11 lead.  Turnovers and defense ruled the second quarter, as neither team scored.  The second half belonged to Rachel Phan of the Lady Raiders, who scored 10 of her game-high 12 points by shredding the Generals defense for close-up opportunities.  Trailing by 7 points at the start of the fourth quarter, the Generals suddenly showed a surge of energy and effort, tying the game at 20 with 3:02 left in the game when Abby Andrews rebounded her own missed free throw and sunk the put-back while being fouled.  Unfortunately, the Lady Raiders defense shut down the Generals the rest of the way, and clutch free throw shooting, including Phan's four makes, iced the game.  Andrews matched Phan point for point with a game-high 12 points, including two first quarter three pointers.  Maggie Cannata, Zara Bracegirdle, Ellie Faber and MiMi Bond each scored 2 points to round out the scoring for the Generals.
