The Harding varsity football team took to the field for its third game of the season against a Catholic West team made up of players from St Henry and St. Matthew School. Although jumping out to a 7-0 lead, the Generals were unable to establish consistency on defense and Catholic West rode a strong running game to a 20-7 victory.
Andrew Romito (Overbrook) put the Generals on the board first, taking a reverse for 20 yards and a touchdown on a 4th and goal situation. Ryan Schmadtke added the extra point for a 7-0 lead. The score was set up by a connection from Schmadtke to Parker Wainwright '18 for 45 yds on the first play of the game. Catholic West drove right back down the field to answer and also converted the two-point conversion for an 8-7 lead.
After a stalled drive, Catholic West again took the ball down the field and scored but missed the two-point conversion for a 14-7 lead. Harding responded and looked to even the score with a touchdown strike from Ryan Schmadtke to Wainwright, but a penalty negated the score and the Generals were unable to put points on the board and went into the half down 14-7.
Harding battled in the second half, but gave up another touchdown on a long pass that set the final score at 20-7. Sam Frank '17 came into the quarterback position and completed several nice passes, one a beautiful seam pass to tight end Chase Franck '17. Franck also created a turnover from his defensive end position in the second half.
The Generals will take to the field again on Thursday with a game against Ensworth at 5:30pm.
