Varsity Girls Basketball Wins HVAC Div. A Championship
The varsity girls entered the HVAC Division A finals last Thursday, February 13 after beating Valor Collegiate in the semifinals 29-9 on Tuesday, February 11. After last year's loss in the finals to Pope Prep, the girls were excited and grateful for another chance to win a championship this season.
This championship game with BGA went back and forth from the start. Both teams were very evenly matched and at the end of the first half the Hawks were down 15-13. In third quarter, the girls came out strong and took a 25-21 lead going into the fourth quarter. In the final six minutes, Jamie Gaddie Embry, who led the Hawks in scoring with 11 points, made two huge baskets in the lane and Margaret Greathouse, who scored 4 points, made two huge free throws to pull the Hawks within 1 with :11 to go. BGA called a timeout to set up one last play to secure the win. However, the Hawks would not be denied. On the inbounds pass, Jamie Gaddie Embry was able to knock the ball away from their post. Harper Atwood, who went 3/4 from the free throw in the second half, picked up ball and dribbled to half court looking ahead to Caroline Sheets who was wide open for a go ahead layup with :2 seconds to go. This play sealed the win 33-32! It was an unbelievable finish for a team that had fought so hard throughout this game and the entire season.
Louisa Smith did an awesome job on defense and pumped in 8 points in the win. Caroline Sheets made a big three pointer in the first half and finished with 7 points with her biggest 2 points coming at the end of the game. Logan Scott, Riley Bertelli, and Diane French played great defense and brought energy throughout the game. Grace Thigpen, Charlotte Thigpen, Ava Senne, Sumner Hanks, and Nina Armstrong brought energy as well and were so supportive throughout the game. We are a family and all of these girls were such a joy to coach. Coach Wainwright and I are so proud of this group of girls and their accomplishments! Go Hawks!
