The Harding Academy varsity football team took to the field one final time on Tuesday, Sept. 26 to face the Mt Juliet Christian Academy Saints. The Generals (who only dressed out 14 players) and Saints played a tight game in the first half and went into the break with Harding holding a 14-6 lead. Even though the Saints were able to recover an onside kick to start the second half, Harding's defense held strong and then the offense got on track to extend the lead and eventually win in dominating fashion, 34-6.
In only his second game as the starting quarterback, Chase Franck '19 once again managed the offense efficiently. Harding depended on its running game for most of its offensive production. Tailback Jordan Turner '18 (USN) returned to the mix and provided a spark to add to his always consistent backfield mate, Andrew Romito '18. Both backs had solid performances and scored two touchdowns each. Romito also added two, two-point conversions and accounted for 16 of the Generals 34 points.
The defense buckled down in the second half as well, not allowing any points after the Saints initial score. Parker Wainwright '18 intercepted a pass and took it the distance for a score and Andrew Romito also intercepted a pass from his inside linebacker position. Wainwright, Romito and Conor Corby '19 all played well to anchor the defense. The defensive line made multiple stops in the backfield and was led by Clarke Johnson '18 who had several tackles for loss. Jordan Turner, Samuel Hanrahan '18, Luke Venable '18, Walker Lindsey '19, Hudson Powell '18 and Huston Thrasher '19 all contributed to the great defensive effort up front.
For the second consecutive game, Hall Oakley '18, Noah Kim (USN) and Chase Franck contained the passing game in the secondary and did not allow any impactful plays.
The Harding Generals completed a very challenging schedule at 3-3 and ended the season on a two-game winning streak. We salute our 8th graders and want to recognize them all for their contributions to Harding football for the past 4 years. They will certainly be missed! The Harding 8th grade football players are: Charlie Goidel, Samuel Hanrahan, Clarke Johnson, Hall Oakley, Hudson Powell, Andrew Romito Ryan Schmadtke, Jordan Turner, Luke Venable and Parker Wainwright.
