This year, Spencer Creek Golf Course has introduced a new, Ryder Cup style match play tournament pairing the best 18 golfers from the HVAC against the best players from the MNAA (public school) leagues.
Weatherly Spence and Alston Aron both qualified for this team. On Wednesday, both teams arrived ready for a completely different kind of match. First, they were playing match play. They played with their normal opponets at other HVAC schools. They were also playing middle schoolers that they had likely never played against. And, finally, girls would play against boys and vice versa. It all came down to where they were ranked by average score.
Weatherly played beautifully with her teammate, Orin Bass of Ensworth. They partnered well, and talked and strategized the whole round. In fact, they out-strategized me on the second hole. They looked like they might lose the hole, and I suggested they concede the hole. The other players got frustrated with their own play, and we won the hole! I realized after the match that their team used every one of Weatherly's drives. In particular, on the last hole, while behind in the match, Weatherly was the only player to hit the green. They parred the hole to win the hole and tie the match.
While I didn't get to follow Alston's group, he told me that he played well and they tied their match. He partnered well with Jack Joseph of BGA. In all, so far, Harding has won 1 of the entire HVAC's 3 1/2 points in the tournament. The finale will be next Wednesday at Spencer Creek.
