The Harding Generals 6th grade football team fell behind early to a Lipscomb team that jump ahead on them with a three touchdown lead in the first half. The Generals, however, did not quit. The Generals began their comeback attempt when Montgomery Owen took a handoff from Clay Close and sprinted down the right sideline for a long gain, where he was tackled at the opponent’s 12 yard line. Unfortunately, Owen hyper-extended his knee and was helped off the field by the trainer. Miles Hamilton, Owen’s replacement, came in and did not skip a beat. He scored the Generals first touchdown a few plays later when he took a toss from Close and sprinted down the left sideline for a score. The two point conversion was not successful however, which would end up costing the Generals later. The defense then came in and held Lipscomb to a three and out. The offense went to work again as Close found Chandler Schultz streaking down the middle of the field for a 25 yard completion. After several long runs by Hamilton, the Generals were in position to score again as they were 10 yards away from scoring their second touchdowns. Unfortunately, the Generals were out of time outs and the clock expired on them before they could reach the end zone.
The Generals took the momentum onto the second half. Montgomery Owen mustered up some courage and came back to the ball game, despite his knee injury, to help his team. On the second offensive play in the third quarter, Owen took a handoff and sprinted 40 yards down the left sideline for the General’s second score. This time, Close found Sims Herron in the corner of the end zone for a two point conversion. The Generals remained on attack mode when Chandler Schultz kick off was fumbled by the Lipscomb returner and recovered by John Churchwell. After a successful long pass from Close to Owen, Owen took a handoff from Close and sprinted 15 yards into the end zone for the Generals third touchdown. The two point attempt was unsuccessful. At this point of the game, the Generals narrowed the score to within four points: 20 to 24. The difference: Lipscomb converted all of their extra point attempts after the touchdown.
The Harding Generals could not score another touchdown to steal the win, however. The fourth quarter was a defensive battle. In fact, Lipscomb scored a late touchdown late to seal the game. The Generals tip their hats off to Lipscomb for the win. Though the Generals lost for the first time, they showed a lot of character and mental toughness. They did not quit and kept battling. Even the players, who suffered minor injuries, refused to sit out because they did not want to let their teammates down. The players showed plenty of hearts and each player felt that they could come back. That in itself is a victory for each Harding player. Please come and support the team this Saturday as they try to get back on the winning track and battle St. Paul at BGA stadium. The game is set to kick off at 11AM.
