Before Thanksgiving Break the team gathered to begin the new season with our pre-season team meeting/retreat where players and coaches undertook a series of team building/bonding discussions and activities focusing on players taking ownership of the team and centering our energy and efforts on the team's core values.
After dining on a sampling of the players' favorite foods and learning about some of the favorite holidays, seasons, vacation spots, places to shop, books, movies, music and school subjects of the players, the team discussed the topic of Ownership and the idea of the players being owners of the team. We talked about the differences in how we treat things given to us versus things we purchase with our own hard-earned money. We agreed that we wanted to treat our team with the care and detail that we treat things that we own after purchasing them with our own hard-earned money.
In addition, we discussed our three core values: (1) Respect; (2) Strong Work Ethic; and (3) Relentless Effort.
(1) Respect. We discussed and agreed that respect is the result of a choice or a series of choices. Self Respect: The girls suggested that we can respect ourselves by making healthy choices in what we eat and in exercising regularly and getting enough sleep. Respecting Others: The players discussed having good manners, looking people in the eye when you talk to them and simply holding the door for people as ways to show respect to others. We discussed generally respecting our team, teammates and coaches; the school, other students, teachers and administrators; our opponents and other people outside our school walls. The girls talked about how our team service projects not only bond us together as a team but also help us show respect and do good in the community. We also discussed how our actions - both respectful and disrespectful - reflect on our team, teammates and coaches, as well as the school, and emphasized using constructive language to build up others rather than destructive language to tear down others.
(2) Strong Work Ethic. We reviewed our team motto - Outwork, Out-Hustle, Out-Prepare. We agreed that our team motto is applicable both on the court and in the classroom as well as in other aspects of life.
(3) Relentless Effort. The girls discussed how giving relentless effort benefits the team in practice and in games and can benefit each of us in our other endeavors in life.
The team is poised to progress through the season guided by our team's core values.
