On To The Semis: Harding Girls Defeat DCA to Advance to TIAA Final 4
Coach Holleman
The Harding Academy Varsity Girls basketball team rode a big second quarter and steady defense to defeat TIAA East Division No. 1 Seed Donelson Christian Academy 38-23 to advance to the TIAA conference tournament semifinals on Friday.
A week after erasing a double digit lead and forcing overtime at Harding Academy, the home-standing DCA Wildcats came out in the first quarter of this TIAA Quarterfinal rematch and matched the Generals' 6 points from Riley Jones and Grace Moore for a 6-6 tie score after one quarter of play. After getting their sole 3-pointer of the game to unintentionally bank into the basket, DCA took a 12-9 lead early in the second quarter. Then, Carly Frist got hot from the outside, draining one 3 ball to tie the game at 12-12 and yet another later in the quarter as Harding finished the first half on a 12-2 run. In addition to Carly Frist's 9 second quarter points, the Generals got baskets from Jones, Mary Haley and Lindsey Parker to take a 21-14 lead into the locker room.
In the third quarter, Carly Frist got multiple steals in scoring 6 points, while Jones got a tough basket to fall off an offensive rebound and Annelise Kyzer converted 1 of 2 free-throw attempts. The Harding defense all but shut down DCA's offense in the quarter and staked the visitors to a 30-18 lead heading into the final frame. In the fourth quarter, the visitors continued to play solid defense while patiently running their offense and time off the clock while extending their lead to the final score of 38-23.
Carly Frist led all scorers with 17 points, followed by Jones with 10 points. The Generals also got 4 points from Haley, 3 points from Kyzer and 2 points each from Moore and Parker. Harding Academy (11-6) next faces Davidson Academy on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the TIAA tournament semifinals at Nashville Christian School.
