The first grade social studies curriculum introduces students to map directions and symbols. Students learn to read school and United States maps to identify four oceans and seven continents. The curriculum also includes the study of significant Americans and their contributions to the country as well as the study of pilgrims and the country's national holidays. Additionally, students learn about civic responsibilities throughout the year.
The second grade social studies curriculum includes the study of geography and maps. In addition, students explore history through a study of Native Americans. Civic awareness and responsibility are a focus throughout the year.
The third grade social studies curriculum emphasizes map and globe skills as well as early Tennessee history through the War between the States. Students are also given an overview of the responsibilities and structures of both local and federal governments.
The fourth grade social studies curriculum seeks to advance research skills through a variety of projects and activities related to the culture, physical geography, and economy of each region of the United States. Map and globe skills are reinforced throughout the year. Additionally, the curriculum incorporates an overview of American government, focusing on the founding documents, separation of powers, and electoral process.
The fifth grade social studies curriculum includes a study of early exploration, European settlements in North America, and the American Revolution, which include elements of history, geography, economics, and civics.
The kindergarten social studies curriculum gives an introduction to the role of the citizen, past, present and future, holidays, and special Americans. It also includes an introduction to the use of maps and globes.
