RED Lockdown Drill

Dear Parents,

Welcome back from Spring Break. I hope you all were able to find some time to relax and recharge. I wanted to write this reminder email about our RED lockdown drill on Wednesday morning at 10:00 AM.

As I mentioned in my letter on February 28 regarding our steps to ensure the safety of our students, we will be conducting a lockdown drill on Wednesday, March 28, at 10:00 AM. This drill will be different than the ones we’ve done in the past, as it is a RED lockdown versus our usual YELLOW lockdown. A RED lockdown drill will involve closing and locking all doors, drawing shades, turning off the lights and finding a safe space in the classroom. We will not be barricading doors, as we will work our way to steps like this over time and as developmentally appropriate.

To that point, our School Counselor, Rebecca Igleheart, has shared with our faculty ideas on how to introduce this topic to their students. You will find that language at the bottom of this email. I share this with you all, as it may prove helpful as you engage in conversations with your child in preparation for the lockdown drill on Wednesday. The full faculty will also be meeting this afternoon to discuss this language, the drill procedures and a variety of what-ifs (as much as is possible in a drill situation), so that we are as prepared as we can be.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for your support on this important work.
