Harding Athletic Highlights - January 6, 2023
Girls' Varsity Basketball Highlights (January 2nd-6th)
The Harding varsity girls’ basketball team returned from winter break this week as they headed into the heart of their game schedule. This past Wednesday evening the Hawks hosted the Lions from Grace Christian Academy for their first home game of the season. Margie Clark ‘24 got the offense going early, with a couple of big time buckets in the first quarter to give the Hawks some confidence offensively. The game was very evenly matched as the lead switched hands multiple times in the first half, as the Lions went into halftime with a narrow lead of 14-10. Greer Bodzy ‘23 gave the team valuable minutes in her return from injury, and led the team with six points overall. Hilary Fremont ‘24 provided a defensive spark with multiple steals turning into fastbreak layups on the opposite end. Margaux Brown ‘24 facilitated the Hawks’ offense well the entire game from her point guard position, and even had a three point shot attempt at the buzzer to try and force overtime. Unfortunately, the shot did not convert and the Lions held on in a nail-biter by a final score of 24-21.

The Hawks had a very quick turnaround as they traveled to Lipscomb Academy the very next day for an afternoon matchup against the Mustangs. The Mustangs got off to a hot start and never looked back. Their full court defensive pressure gave the Hawks a really hard time, resulting in a handful of turnovers and easy fastbreak layups for the Mustangs. Caroline Sheets ‘25 played some valuable minutes and scored the only basket for the Hawks in the first quarter, giving her team some confidence heading into the next frame. Louisa Smith ‘25 gave the team a spark in the second half with her defensive full court pressure, forcing turnovers and gaining extra possessions for her team. In the end, the Mustangs’ defensive pressure was too much for the Hawks as they struggled to get anything going offensively, losing by a score of 39-7. The Hawks will look to bounce back next week with a couple of home games starting with a matchup against FRA next Tuesday at 4:00pm. Go Hawks!
Varsity Boys Basketball Jan. 2-6
The Hawks welcomed Grace Christian to the Robert's Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 4. It was a hard fought game throughout. In the end, the Hawks lost 28-25. Eli Russ led the team in scoring with 13 points. Jackson Lucas played his best game of the season and ended with 6 points. Chase Embry continued to lead the Hawks as a floor general. He also finished with 5 points.
On Thursday, January 5 the Hawks traveled to Lipscomb Academy. At the half, they were down 28-12 to a very good team. However, in the second half, the team responded well with great effort and fight. They outscored Lipscomb 14-4 in the fourth quarter. However, the final score was 44-34 in favor of the Mustangs. Quinn Taylor led the team in scoring with 20 points with four huge three pointers. Eli Russ had another solid performance. He finished with 8 points. Chase Embry had several assists and 4 points. Next Tuesday, January 10 at 5:00, the Hawks welcome the FRA Panthers to campus. Come out and support the Hawks in the HVAC conference battle.
Girls Developmental Blue vs. White Game 1/6
The Harding girls' developmental team played their second intrasquad game last night. The blue team came out victorious with a 21-8 win. Jamie Gaddie Embry led the game scoring 13 of the blue teams' 21 points. Grace Thigpen added six points and Anne McCarley also added a big bucket to the blue teams' tally. The white team had three different point scorers. Fielding Moloney scored four, while Grier Skeen and Blythe Darden each added a basket to help their team. The Hawks are back in action Friday, January 13th for their third intrasquad game.
Boys Developmental Team
In the second game of the Boys Development Basketball series, Harding White comes with a dominant win over Harding Navy 25-15 to tie the series 1-1. Navy was very limited with players in this game but fought hard to stay in the game. White was able to get to the basket with ease throughout most of the game stretching their lead to 10 at halftime. Navy would struggle to keep possession of the ball leading to easy points for the other team.
Harding White would be led in scoring by Wells Rick with 7 points followed by Sebastian Muller with 6 points. Mattia Zanetti, Ruarie Shaver, and Van Peterson would also help out, each having 4 points.
Harding Navy would be led in scoring by Thomas Freeman with 11 points followed by Levi Orley and Mateo Lyn-Cook with 2 points each.
Harding Navy will have a chance to take back the lead in the series next week in game three of the season.
