Harding Athletic Highlights - September 9, 2022
Hawks Win Home Opener
That Harding Academy varsity football field was finally back on its home field on Thursday, September 8 in a matchup with the Webb School (Bell Buckle). The outcome was never in doubt as Harding raced out to a 34-0 first half lead and ended up securing its second victory of the a season with a 42-6 final score.
It was a great opportunity to get lots of players quality playing team. The effort was solid across the board in all three phases of the game. Quinn Taylor '23 scored two touchdowns, one of which came on a kickoff return. The other four Harding touchdowns came from four different players: Daniel Maumus '23, Jackson Lucas '23, Zain Khaleeli, and Landon Willis. Two point conversions were scored by Robert Topping '24, Landon Willis and Chris White.
The Hawks have a tough final two-game stretch beginning next week with an away game at FRA on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 6:00pm. The season concludes on Thursday, Sept. 29 with the annual Spirit Game against the Ensworth Tigers at 5:00pm. Go Hawks!!
Varsity Cross-Country Competes at Vaughn's Gap in Week 3
The Running Hawks ran at Vaughn's Gap on Thursday, September 8. The competition was tough. However, that did not hinder the performance from both teams. Every runner set a new personal record. In the girl's race, Hilary Fremont finished in 6th place overall with a time of 13:57. Annie Thurman was able to knock off 2:07 from her previous best. She finished in 27th place overall with a time of 15:14. On the boys side, 6th grader Sebastian Mueller ran an excellent race for his first meet in middle school. He finished in 6th place overall with a time of 12:38 in the two mile race. Judge Murphy continued to show his ability to grind out a race. He finished in 16th place overall with a time of 13:39. We are also so proud of the effort from teammates Robert Thompson, Savannah Fitzgerald, and Fletcher Brown. Next Thursday, September 15 the teams will travel back to Vaughn's Gap. The girls race will start at 4:30 with the boys race to follow. Come out and support the teams. Go Hawks!
6th Grade Football (September 5-9)
The Harding 6th grade football team had their first home game of their season this past Wednesday against St. Paul Christian Academy. The game did not start off the way the Hawks had hoped, as St. Paul was able to return the opening kickoff for a touchdown to take an early lead. However, the Hawks didn’t flinch and responded extremely well. On the ensuing offensive possession, the Hawks moved the ball 71 yards on 13 total plays for a score. On a crucial third down and goal from the 16 yard line, Ben Lucas ‘25 was able to sneak behind the secondary from his wide receiver position and secure the touchdown pass from quarterback Briggs Waddey ‘25. Down two points leading into the second half, the Hawks tried to build off of their momentum but were unable to keep the pace with a stout St. Paul team. Holden Thomas ‘25 had a great game defensively, leading the team in tackles from his linebacker position. St. Paul was able to control the line of scrimmage in the second half, which led the way for them to take control and come out on top. The Hawks will look to bounce back next Tuesday afternoon at home as they welcome St. Henry at 5:30PM. Go Hawks!

Another great match was had by Harding Girls Varsity tennis on this past Tuesday, September 6th verses Christ Presbyterian Academy. Congrats to Caroline Vrettos as she fought hard at the 2 singles spot, and took her first victory of the season (8-4). Margaret Greathouse had another great win at 3 singles with a score of 8-2. Kipling Miller and Lauren Sullivan at the 1 doubles had a great match taking the win at 8-2 making them undefeated as a doubles team thus far in the season! Congrats to all the girls varsity players that played well and fought hard this past Tuesday.

JV Volleyball Has First Win of the Season
The JV team had its first win on Friday versus Poplar Grove. The team did a fabulous job communicating and working together on the court. They showed great control in their passes and serves! Shout out to our game captains Jamie Gaddie Embry and Ellie Cornwall.

The varsity team had its first win of the season in this game versus BGA. The team showed great teamwork and communication. The team had great passes, sets, and hits. Congrats to the team!
