Harding Athletic Highlights - September 2, 2022
Hawks Soar Against Pope Prep
After a two week break the Harding Hawks varsity football team was back in action on the road at Pope Prep in Hendersonville. The Hawks wasted no time marching down the field to punch in a score and never looked back in a 32-16 victory over the Knights.
Jackson Lucas '23 scored the first touchdown on a QB keeper and converted the 2 point conversion to Daniel Maumus '23 to put the Hawks in the lead 8-0. The Knights responded after a Harding turnover and tied the game at 8-8 in the second quarter with only 1:07 left in the half. Lucas completed multiple passes to wide receiver Quinn Taylor '23 as the Hawks marched down the field in :30 to score again and take a 16-8 lead into the half.
It was all Harding in the second half as Landon Willis took a power play over 60 yards to the house. A Lucas to Taylor 2pt. conversion on a slant route made the score 24-8. On the ensuing possession, Eli Howard intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown, every defensive lineman's dream! After Chris White converted the 2 pt. conversion, Harding's lead extended to 32-8. Pope Prep added a late touchdown and 2 pt. conversion to set the final score at 32-16.
The Harding defense was stout all night. Eli Whelan, Daniel Maumus and Jackson Lucas kept the Pope Prep rushing attack bottled up throughout the game. Gabe Adams was consistently in the backfield making plays from his defensive end position. Finally, the Harding secondary of Chase Embry, Chris White and Quinn Taylor prevented Pope Prep from making any big plays, which they have thrived on to this point in the season.
Finally, the Harding offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage all night allowing the offense to run basically whatever it wanted. The starting five of Cooper Wells '23, Julian Wyatt, Levi Broadwell, Luke Fields '23 and Luke Kleiner were dominant. It was a great team win!
Harding is back in action next week on Thursday, Sept. 8 against Webb School at 5:00 PM. This is the first home game for the Hawks and we are hoping for a big crowd! Come out and support us as we go for win #2! Go Hawks!!
Varsity Cross-Country Travels To Ensworth
The cross-country teams traveled to Ensworth for the second meet of the season on Thursday, September 1. Hilary Fremont ran an awesome race. She finished in 5th place overall with a time of 14:30. On the boy's side, Judge Murphy held his own. He finished in 7th place overall with a time of 13:50. Next week, the team will travel to Vaughn's Gap on Thursday, September 8. The girl's race will start at 4:30 with the boy's race to follow. Go Hawks!
6th Grade Football Defeats Pope Prep 16-0
The Harding 6th grade football team traveled to Hendersonville this past Thursday afternoon for a matchup against Pope Prep. The Hawks got off to a fast start on offense as they drove the length of the field in only three plays for a score, capped off by a long touchdown run down the left sideline by quarterback Briggs Waddey ‘25. He then found Avin Burditt ‘25 on the left side of the end zone to complete the two point conversion and take the early lead 8-0. On the very next play the Hawks got the ball back thanks to a hustle play from Ripley Bickerstaff ‘25 sprinting down the field to recover the loose ball and give his team possession. Later in the half, the Hawks defense came up big with a huge stop inside the five yard line to keep the momentum heading into the second half. Ayden Love (Valor) was the first one in on the tackle from his defensive end position to force the turnover on downs. Pope Prep struggled to move the ball in the second half, and the Hawks forced two turnovers highlighted by an impressive interception from Ben Lucas ‘25. The Hawks were able to move the ball very effectively through the running game thanks to the play from their running back Britton Dibble (USN) as he broke out for a handful of big time runs. The Hawks were able to run out the clock as they drove the ball down the field for their second score late in the fourth quarter. This was the Hawks’ most complete performance of the season as they finished the game with a win by a score of 16-0. They will look to keep this momentum rolling next week as they have their first home game of the season September 7th versus St. Paul at 4:30pm. Go Hawks!
JV Volleyball Loses a Close Match to BGA
Our JV team played a close game versus Battle Ground Academy tonight! The team displayed great camaraderie and sportsmanship. They did a great job cheering for each other and coming together after each point. Our game captains were 6th graders Rosa Spaventa, Miriam Russ, and Ellie Cornwall. Shout out to some of our strong servers Adrienne Numbers and Jamie Gaddie Embry!
Varsity Girls Tennis vs. St. Cecilia Academy
Harding Girls' tennis played St. Cecilia Academy in their second match of the year. Margaret Greathouse had a commanding 8-1 win. Lauren Sullivan and Kipling Miller also won 8-6 after a back and forth doubles match. Karson Speyer and Louisa Smith were also victorious in their doubles match. Harding tennis is back in action Tuesday September 6th vs. CPA.

Harding Girls tennis had a great first match on Tuesday at Battle Ground Academy. Each girl played hard, and most importantly had great sportsmanship. One BGA parent took the time to come up to the HA coaches to comment on how sweet the Harding girls were, and what great sports they were the whole match.
The 1 doubles team Kipling Miller and Lauren Sullivan took a win with 8-3. Along with the 2 doubles team Louisa Smith and Margaret Greathouse took the win 8-3. Great teamwork from both teams!

Looking ahead, next week will be a busy one. With 3 matches in 4 days the Hawks are eager to fly higher and higher!

The varsity boys tennis Hawks finally got their first match experience of the season. After several weeks of tryouts and training the Hawks took on BGA on Tuesday, August 30. All of our athletes had a good experience and enjoyed the challenges of new opponents. Although we did not come out victorious on the scoreboard, the Hawks are laying an amazing foundation. Learning how to compete all the way to the end, and how to overcome adversity.
Looking ahead, next week will be a busy one. With 3 matches in 4 days the Hawks are eager to fly higher and higher!
