Jennifer Mathews Smith '74—Distinguished Alum

And the award goes to… Jennifer Mathews Smith! Harding Academy’s 2004 Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to Smith, a member of Harding’s third graduating class, in May. Born and raised in Nashville, she and husband Roy are the parents of two current Harding students: Shelby in sixth grade and Emily in fifth grade. Smith was recognized with the award because of her efforts in getting Harding’s Alumni Association up and running and for her extensive professional work in the community. During her high school years, Smith worked as Garden Volunteer at Cheekwood Botanical Gardens. From there, she earned a degree from the University of Tennessee in Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Design, where she served as President of the Horticulture Club. For nine years, Smith worked for the Memphis Botanic Garden, developing the volunteer program, starting the educational programs for children and adults, as well as the communication/ special events department with marketing and fundraising emphasis. She is also proud of her involvement with the Junior League of Nashville, serving as Show House Landscape Chairman, Publicity Chair, and Director of Fundraising.

In 2000, Smith was chosen as the founding president of the Harding Alumni Association. Recognizing Harding’s role in her professional achievements, Smith said, “My education at Harding has led me to be successful in my career.”
