The physical education curriculum at Harding is intentionally designed to build friendships, promote physical fitness, build camaraderie across genders and grade levels, help students learn conflict resolution and develop life-long healthy habits. In order to develop and foster the enjoyment of movement, children need exposure to a variety of physical activities and sports that include individual and team games, recreational activities, fitness components, and team-building opportunities.
We follow the guidelines set by NASPE (National Association for Sports and Physical Education) in order to set benchmarks for performance outcomes in the psychomotor, cognitive and affective domains. Our teachers employ a variety of best practices to make sure that children have a wide range of experiences to prepare them for a physically active lifestyle well beyond Harding. We believe that exposing children to positive experiences in the classroom will foster a love of movement and the confidence to continue a physically active life outside of school.
Physical education in the middle school continues the emphasis on overall physical fitness begun in the lower school. It focuses on developing those skills, which will allow each student to experience physical success and a feeling of self-worth. Skills are developed in the areas of soccer, floor hockey, flag football, indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball, badminton, lacrosse, tennis, fitness and conditioning as well as other team sports.
Students may elect to take physical education or one of the athletic team offerings each season.
