From the Desk of of the Head of School - March 9, 2018

Dear Parents,

Wednesday afternoon our JV girls lacrosse team took on Brentwood Middle School. It was a well fought match, ending in a 12-10 loss, but it was a win on another level. This year, our 5th graders can participate at the JV level and in the second half one of those 5th graders stepped into the goal for the first time ever.

If you are not familiar with the sport of lacrosse, the goalie is tasked as the last line of defense for a six by six goal. Players whip a small, hard, rubber ball as fast as they can at the goalie in an attempt to find the back of the net. It is a very difficult position to play - both technically and mentally. Layer on top of that a player who is new to the game of lacrosse and, as a 5th grader, new to interscholastic athletics and the nerves can be difficult to control.

In this game, the starting goalie from the first half took the field to play defense. What is special about this is that, in typical Harding fashion, the older player asked to go out there so she could coach, mentor, and support her teammate in goal.

Sports play such a vital role for so many of our students as they grow into who they will become. In this case, both players (and everyone else on the field that day) learned what it is to be a good teammate. Our starting goalie is well on the way to being a true leader and our younger goalie has gained the self-assurance to conquer any challenge.

Have a great weekend!
