From the Desk of the Head of School- November 11, 2022

Dear Harding Academy Learning Community,

Another week has flown by and - if you can believe it - we are in the second week of the second trimester at Harding Academy. Thanksgiving Break is right around the corner, which is exciting to me as Thanksgiving is my personal favorite holiday. Which brings me to the focus of this week’s newsletter - our food drive benefiting Second Harvest of Middle Tennessee and partnership with the Salvation Army Angel Tree.

We have been partnering with the food bank for more than thirty years. Families who benefit from the food we collect for Second Harvest...

  • ...value education. 71% of households have a member with a GED or high school degree, while 23% of Second Harvest clients attained some form of higher education. However, 26% of client households were forced to make a choice between food or education.
  • ...own homes. 57% of the families who visit Second Harvest Food Bank had to choose between buying food or paying their mortgage.
  • ...are comprised of children. 64,000 children are served by Second Harvest Food Bank.

We are just about half way towards our goal of 100 boxes. If you haven’t had an opportunity to fill your red bag, please do so this week and return it to one of the volunteers in the morning drop off line.

Along with The Second Harvest Food Drive, the Salvation Army Angel Tree is underway. For the past five years, the Harding community has adopted children in the greater Nashville community to help with their needs and wants. We still have 70 angels who need to be adopted. Please consider supporting one this holiday season. Click HERE to view our list of angels to adopt.

As a community, we are fortunate to have this time to engage in meaningful conversations with our children about how a number of individuals engaging in small actions can collectively be transformational. It also provides us with an opportunity to actively demonstrate our commitment to being caring citizens. Giving generously to both of these organizations and involving your children in the process, helps foster that sense of empathy which is so critical for future success.

Thank you for coming together as a school community to affirm Harding's timeless mission and to honor the fact that there is no greater responsibility in the world than to raise and educate children who are able to think critically and care deeply for the community in which they find themselves.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
