From the Desk of the Head of School- September 9, 2022

Dear Harding Academy Learning Community,

Yesterday, someone mentioned that it was Day 17 of school and that we were now 10% of the way through the school year. I will admit - I’m still trying to wrap my head around that. It somehow feels like both an incredibly long time and a short time. In some ways we are getting into the meat of the school year this week. New experiences, new learning standards, new discoveries abound.

In fact, this afternoon a very excited Mrs. Perkins ran breathlessly into my office to call me to the NOP. Her class had found a praying mantis. As they were handling it, they discovered a small sac hanging from the insect. Suddenly, according to the cacophony of second graders who relayed the story, two baby praying mantis popped out onto the young man carrying the animal. By the time I arrived, the class had created a mini biosphere for the mother and babies and Mrs. Perkins was handing out magnifying glasses.

I am certain that Mrs. Perkins won’t let this be 100% of the experience. I’m certain she will make this rare moment the first 10% of something incredibly special. I could see her mind creating connections and leveraging this across a lot of different teaching that awaits our students. It left me excited for the next 10% of the school year and the 10% after that.

I hope you enjoy your weekend and are looking forward to the 90% left to be explored!
