Harding Athletic Highlights - August 26, 2022
5th Grade Football vs. Oak Hill
The 5th Grade football team hosted their first home game on Thursday, Aug. 25 vs Oak Hill. After about an hour delay due to lightning, the teams finally took to the field. The game was tight throughout and the Harding boys fought all the way. Several goal line and 4th down stands kept the Hawks in the game until the offense got on track.
Oak Hill started the scoring, but Sam Tomichek broke a big run and got Harding right back in it. After a couple drives Oak Hill got down close and finally punched in another score. Harding wasted no time this time marching down the field with a nice mix of runs and passes. Contributions and plays made by several receivers and backs to get the Hawks down close paid off with a Sam Tomichek touchdown. The score was 14-12 for the next quarter and with just a few mins to go, Oak Hill picked up another score.
With no time-outs and little time remaining, the Hawks came up short on the next drive and gave the ball back. With about a minute and a half the Harding defense stepped up and stripped the ball and gave the offense one last shot. After a couple successfu plays, the Hawks had one last shot deep down the field and came up just a little bit short.
The defense was stout all day and the offense continues to make big improvements game to game. The final score was 22-12 in favor of Oak Hill. Just a few additional players making big contributions yesterday were Campbell Evans, August Frisbee, QB Michael Holscher, and Chris Topping just to name a few.
The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 7 with a home game against St. Paul at 5:45pm. Go Hawks!!

6th Grade Football Takes On Nashville Catholic
The Harding Academy 6th grade football team traveled to Father Ryan High School for an evening matchup against Nashville Catholic this past Tuesday. The Hawks got off to a slow start in the first half, as they struggled to move the ball offensively. Holden Thomas ‘25 and Elijah Westbrook ‘25 showed great effort and leadership as they played a significant number of snaps on both sides of the ball throughout the game. They went into halftime down a few scores, but the Hawks did not back down. They came out with more intensity in the second half and started having success moving the ball through their passing game. The connection between quarterback Briggs Waddey ‘25 and his receiver Jack Moran (Holy Trinity Montessori) was on fire over the course of the second half including a long completion with a great second effort from Moran to get the Hawks on the board. Following a fumble recovery from the Hawks’ defense, Waddey scrambled out of the pocket and added another touchdown run later in the fourth quarter. The Hawks outscored Nashville Catholic 14-8 in the second half, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit. The Hawks look forward to next Thursday, September 1st for an afternoon matchup at Pope Prep. Go Hawks!
Judge Murphy Competes In The First Meet Of The Season
Judge battled several teams on Thursday, August 25 at Vaughn's Creek. He finished his two mile race in 14:10. This placed him in 28th place overall. Next week, the cross-country teams will travel to Ensworth High School on Thursday, September 1. The girl's race will start at 4:30 with the boy's race to follow. Come out and support the Hawks!
