Hawks Grounded In First Game of the Season
The Harding Academy Hawks varsity football team began the 2022 season traveling to Lieper's Fork to take on Grace Christian Academy. On the strength of 1 first touchdown and 1 second half touchdown, GCA was able to hold off a late charge from the Hawks and win the game 16-8.
The offense finally got going in the 4th quarter. A long pass play from quarterback Jackson Lucas '23 to wide receiver Quinn Taylor '23 set up the Hawks deep in GCA territory. Lucas took it from there, scoring on a QB keeper to cut the deficit to 16-6. The Lucas to Taylor connection again was good for the 2 pt. conversion. The Hawks came very close to recovering the onside kick with 2 minutes remaining, but were unable to give themselves another opportunity to tie the game. GCA ran out the clock to secure the victory
Chase Embry '23 and Eli Whelan (USN) turned in solid defensive performances for Harding. GCA struggled to get much going on offense, but found an inside run game that was difficult for the Hawks to stop. The coaches were really encouraged by the effort. Down 16-0 it would have been easy to give up, but they kept fighting and almost had a chance at the end. Many first game errors will get corrected as the Hawks prepare for game 2.
Harding returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 1 when they travel to Pope Prep in Hendersonville for a 6:00pm game against the Knights. Go Hawks!!
6th Grade Football (August 15-19)
The Harding Academy 6th grade football team had a strong week of practice preparing for their first game of the season Thursday night at Grace Christian Academy. Kireet Annam gave the Hawks some early momentum with a hustle play, recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff and giving his team the ball deep in opponents’ territory. Later in the first half, Abe Boehler made a huge interception from his cornerback position as the Lions were starting to put together a drive. The first half went back and forth in a defensive battle, as neither team was able to convert their chances and went into halftime tied at 0-0. The Lions broke the tie with a couple big plays in the second half to take the lead by two scores, however, the Hawks continued to fight until the end. Briggs Waddey connected on a pass to Jack Moran over the middle of the field in the fourth quarter, and Jack made a very impressive effort to stretch over the goal line for the touchdown. In the end, the clock ran out on the Hawks as they fell to the Lions by a score of 16-6. The Hawks will look to build off of this as they head to Father Ryan for a contest against Nashville Catholic next Tuesday night at 6:00PM. Go Hawks!
