Harding Athletic Highlights 8/30-9/3

7/8 Football Defeats Pope Prep in First Game of the Year
The Harding Hawks took to Sohr Track and Field for a game for the first time since September of 2018 and scored a win against the visiting Pope Prep, 22-6. There were no games played in 2019 due to low participation numbers and the pandemic took away the 2020 season. 2021 has given new life to the Harding football program and the players seized upon the opportunity. Sam Bowers '22 scored all 3 touchdowns for the Hawks as they went out to a 22-0 lead through three quarters. Bowers had a pick six for the first score, one of two interceptions he had on the day. Jackson Lucas '23 led the Harding offense from his quarterback position and converted one two-point conversion. Christian Land '22 wreaked havoc in the backfield from his defensive end position all game. The Harding defensive secondary comprised of Bowers, Chase Embry '23, Daniel Maumus '23 and Quincy Topping '22 made it very difficult for Pope Prep to have any success throwing the football. Quincy Topping also made a phenomenal sideline catch for a crucial 4th quarter conversion. It was a great first win and a total team effort. Harding returns to action next Thursday, Sept. 9 in a home game against BGA at 5:00 PM. Go Hawks!!

Varsity Cross-Country Has the First Meet of the Season

The varsity cross-country teams took to the Vaughn's Gap course on Thursday, September 2. We had two runners finish in the top 10 of their respective races. Hilary Fremont finished her two miles in 14:11 with a 6th place finish overall. On the boy's side, Judge Murphy ran his two miles in 14:19 to take 10th place overall. I'm so proud of the effort from both teams. The second meet of the season will be in Franklin at the Harlinsdale Farm course next Thursday, September 9. The girl's race will start at 4:30 with the boy's race to follow. Go Hawks!

Varsity Volleyball vs. FRA
Hawks first home game full of great improvements. Volleyball is a game based on mistakes. How you learn from them, and how you force them onto your opponent is how we become better at the game. This loss against Franklin Road in our first home game was tough, but ultimately we had very good lessons and moments throughout both matches. We keep having incredibly great moments of play within every game, and I continue to feel like we can only go up from here!

6th Grade Football Opens Season
The Harding 6th grade football team lost a hard fought game against Nashville Catholic on Wednesday, Sept.1. The Hawks started strong on both sides of the ball and scored first when Will Bickley threw an 11 yard TD pass to Jayden Sandovol (Valor). Matthew Johnson had several catches as well, including one for 17 yards and a first down. Both defenses were very strong on the day. For Harding, all 17 dressed players were in on at least one tackle!  That is a big achievement for a 6th grade team!
