From the Desk of the Head of School- September 20, 2019

Dear Parents,

Every year I try to throw in a couple of rapid fire posts of what I’ve observed that helps give you a flavor of Harding Academy at work.

  • First graders pushing their library cart down the hall on the way to return their library books.
  • On the turf field the third grade was competing in hacky sac tosses working on accuracy and teamwork.
  • Meanwhile, the PreK was on their way to the Natural Outdoor Playspace to study the butterflies that have congregated on the blooming fauna. If you go over there and walk by they will literally surround you. It’s incredible.
  • The first graders were excitedly taking chicken sandwiches from our new chef, Krys, as parent volunteers and teachers helped them get settled for lunch.
  • 8th graders were collaborating on foreign language projects in their 8th grade lounge, which has new furniture. The most popular of that furniture are the white-board-covered tables where they can write notes to each other between classes.
  • Second grade was listening to Flat Stanley, exploring homophones, and learning how to read dictionary entries during reading classes.
  • The 8th grade math class was being serenaded by 5th grade trumpeters practicing in the outdoor classroom.
  • Nicole Boylan was directing traffic in the center of the 7th and 8th grade lockers on the second floor of the middle school.
  • A third grade classroom was enthusiastically following the prompts of the yoga teacher on the screen during their Friday Yoga Fifteen.
  • Bailey Woods was posting word self portraits created by our 8th graders, which are pictures they draw of themselves that are comprised of words they’ve chosen to represent themselves.
  • PreK students were sending chunks of potatoes flying across the Discovery Lab as they experimented with catapults and learned how they work.
  • A gaggle of excited lower school chess players eagerly setting up boards for their Friday chess club.

As you start your weekend, I want to thank you for entrusting your children to us and I hope you see through these quick observations just what a happy and full experience they have here on a daily basis. What I hope you will take away is that when you view these quick snapshots and zoom out to consider them in their totality, you will see that these are the ways in which we are able to achieve our mission of educating and inspiring young people to become thoughtful, creative, lifelong learners and self-disciplined, responsible, caring citizens.
