October 2018 Alumni eNewsletter

What do you remember from the fall season at Harding?  Cross country meets at Warner Park, soccer games on a field covered in rocks, the fall musical, high school visits, the infamous "egg drop" in science class?  The fall season evokes such nostalgia for me, especially being back on Harding's campus watching the students load the buses for athletic games, seeing the backpacks of middle school students get ever larger as their work load increases, watching the kindergarteners get excited to ring the birthday bell (albeit with a little more fervor than at the beginning of the year), and observing everyone on campus settle in to a new school year.

There is so much happening on campus these days and we don't want you to miss a minute of it!  Fiddler on the Roof just successfully wrapped up and had 94 cast members, 18 stage crew, 6 tech crew, 3 stage managers, and 1 alumni choreographer. This represents 55% of all eligible students participating in the production in some way. The play itself was amazing. But the by-product of student growth through a months-long process like this is a truly remarkable piece of teaching that Dr. Braden Bell and his team facilitate along twice each year.

Over the course of the early fall season 147 students spanning grades 5-8 participated across 14 teams in 7 sports. This represents 67% of all eligible students participating in early fall sports. If you just look at 6th-8th participation it goes up to 79% of middle school students involved in interscholastic athletics. In the various HVAC tournaments our Boys’ Varsity Tennis and Girls’ Cross Country won championships, our Girls’ varsity volleyball made it to the HVAC A Division championship and our Boys’ cross country team competed in the HVAC AA championship, where Eli Heaney '19 placed 4th overall.

To say there isn't a quiet moment at Harding these days is quite the understatement!  Check out some of the upcoming events and join us next time you are in the neighborhood!

Gratefully,
Ruthie Huggins '96
