Varsity Boys Tennis Topples BGA in Opening Match 5-0
The boys' tennis team won their first match of the season against BGA on Monday. The Hawks won in convincing fashion 5-0. With
Walt Sanders sick,
Ricky Reynolds stepped into the #1 singles position and won 8-0. Ricky played with controlled aggression, using his topspin the accurately place the balls for winners on both sides of the court.
Bantly West won his #2 single match 8-1 using excellent height across the net to cause errors from his opponent.
Drake Gambill used his speed and agility to outwit his opponent at the #3 singles spot to win 8-1.
Chris Topping and
Samm Hamm were dominant at the #1 double position, winning 8-0, showcasing their powerful serves and consistent groundstrokes.
Mills Greene and
Braddock Wood won their #2 doubles match with consistency and steady serving.
Hayden Ligon and
Fletcher Brown toppled their doubles opponents, 7-1, at exhibition doubles, serving consistently and using the net to their advantage.
Reed Pennington and
Chris Topping won their exhibition doubles 6-2 against an experience team. Powerful serving and well-placed returns were the key to this victory. Our next match is Friday, September 8 at USN River Campus.
Varsity Girls Cross-Country Opens Season at Vaughn's GapThe cross-country team battled Brentwood Academy, St. Matthew School, and BGA at their first meet of the season on Thursday, August 31.
Hilary Fremont led the team throughout the race. She finished in 4th place overall with a time of 14:02 in the two-mile race.
Eliza Gray Neal had an impressive outing for her first meet at the middle school level. She finished in 5th place overall with a time of 14:19.
Grace Thigpen finished third for our team and 14th place overall with a time of 15:12. It was good to finally get a race under our belts so we could knock off some of the first time jitters. Next Thursday, September 7 the team will travel back to Vaughn's Gap. The girl's race will start at 4:30. Come out and support the team! Go Hawks!
Harding Evens Record at 1-1 With Win Over Pope Prep 28-14The Harding Hawks were able to get back on the winning track this week. The Hawks raced out to a 20-0 first half lead on the strength of their running game. Another score in the second half sent the lead to 28-0 before the Hawks surrendered two 4th quarter touchdowns to the Pope Prep Knights to set the final score at 28-14.
Landon Willis scored on several touchdown runs in the first half. Eli Whelan also scored on a long run and Tyson Haddox fielded a blocked punt and took it in for a score for the final Harding Hawk touchdown.
The Hawk defense was strong the entire game.
Elijah Westbrook had several pass break-ups along with an interception.
Finn Castle also intercepted a pass from his linebacker position. Harding has their second home game in a row next Thursday, Sept. 7 against Ezell-Harding at 5:00 PM. Go Hawks!!
Sixth Grade Football Falls to the BGA WildcatsThe Harding 6th grade football team played its third game at home on Wednesday, Aug. 30th against BGA. The Hawks played hard but could not overcome a very aggressive opponent. Sam Tomichek, Riley Husbands and Michael Holscher provided several hard runs against a very tough defense, but were ultimately unable to score. Defensively the Hawks had key tackles by Campbell Evans, Wyatt Omary, and Andrew Mixon to help stop several drives. Although the final outcome was not in their favor, the team stayed positive and played hard until the end. Final score: BGA 18 - Harding 0. The next game will be Saturday 9/9 at home against Pope Prep. Go Hawks!!
