Harding Athletic Highlights 2/11-2/15

Swimming Generals Place 3rd in HVAC
The swimming Generals of Harding Academy continue to compete at a high level.  On February 2nd, the swimming Generals competed in the HVAC Championship meet at Ensworth High School.  The Generals took home the 3rd Place - Combined Team, 5th Place - Girls Team, and 4th Place - Boys team.

The stage was set at the meet with a great first swim from the Girls 200 Medley Relay (Maggie Soper, Emmie Maumus, Evie McKenzie, Ellie Johnson) placing 6th. The boys team (Witt Maxwell, Charlie Gatto, Dylan Drake, Gabriel Nizzardo) followed with a very close swim in their 200 Medley Relay missing 4th by under a second to earn 5th.  Following the lead of our two relays Sydney Strnad stepped up and finished 6th in both her 200 Freestyle and100 Fly.  Max Kohler followed suit with a strong 4th place finish (and personal best) in his 200 IM; he also finished 3rd in the 100 Freestyle. Evie McKenzie swam great in the 200 IM to finish 10th. Max Boylan had a great swim in the 200 Free to place 9th.  Chase Franck swam an outstanding race in the 50 Free to earn a 10th place finish.  Raleigh Maxwell had a great showing with a 5th place in the 500 Freestyle and an 8th place in the 100 Back.  Charlie Gatto had a outstanding finish in the 100 Breaststroke to finish 9th.  Dylan Drake had a great swim in the 100 Fly to place 8th; followed closely by classmate Witt Maxwell with a personal best for 9th place. Emmie Maumus had an awesome swim to place 10th in the 100 Breaststroke.  Kiley O'Shaughnessy had a personal best in the 100 Free finishing 10th.  Maggie Soper and Eliza Spears both competed in the the 500 free earning 9th and 10 respectively.The Boys 200 & 400 Free Relay (Max Hocker, Chase Franck, Raleigh Maxwell, Max Kohler) took 3rd place and 5th place respectively. The Girls 200 & 400 Free Relays (Eliza Spears, Maggie Soper,Kiley Oshaughnessy, Sydney Strnad) earned a 5th and 4th place finishes.


2019 Spring Athletic Information

Parents and Athletes:

Please find information below for the Spring Athletic Season at Harding Academy.  Questions on any aspects of the programs should be directed to the Head Coach of each sport.

Track and Field

Start date: We will begin practices the week of February 11 for anyone not involved with the all school musical.  There will be no practice on Thursday, February 14 or Friday, Feb. 15. Those in the play will join the team for practices beginning on Tuesday,  Feb 19.

Practice time: 3:00-4:30 M-F. Pickup will be in the depot at Harding at 4:45pm, though parents may pick up athletes at the track on Hwy 70 before the bus leaves. 

Uniform: Athletic gear and running shoes/spikes. Please be sure to dress appropriately the first several weeks of practice. Sweatpants/running pants, long sleeve tops/sweatshirts, and beanie will most likely be necessary.

Parent Meeting: Tuesday, February 19 (5:00pm) – Roberts Gymnasium

Girls Lacrosse

Practices for Girls Lacrosse will begin February 11 for all girls in grades 5-8 not involved with the all school musical. There will be no practice on Thursday, February 14 or Friday, February 15.

Tryouts will be held February 19 (at Kever) and February 20  (at Highway 70). The Varsity/JV team rosters will be posted on CompassNet at some point after the completion of tryouts. Practices will run from 2:45 - 4:45 p.m. daily—and girls will be expected to be at practice promptly after school lets out. Pick up is at the depot at 4:45 p.m.

Girls will be required to have face masks, sticks, cleats, and a fitted mouthguard in order to participate. Please make sure that they dress appropriately for the inconsistent weather this time of year—gloves (with sticky/grip on the fingers), hats and scarves are essential, as well as light rain gear. The girls will also need to bring running shoes to every practice.

Boys Lacrosse

Boys lacrosse will begin practices the week of February 11 for all boys in grades 5-8 not involved with the all school musical.  There will be no practice on Thursday, February 14 or Friday, February 15. Formal practice will start Tuesday, Feb. 19 and tryouts for varsity will take place Feb. 19 and 20. Players need to be dressed and ready to go at 2:50 PM and practice will end at 4:30 PM. Boys can be picked up in the depot at 4:45 PM, or 4:30 at Highway 70, whenever we are practicing there. Players should bring sweatpants/sweatshirts, or other acceptable cold weather gear, until it warms up. Players should also have both cleats and running shoes daily in case of bad weather and indoor practice.  

Parent meeting: Thursday, Feb. 21 in the theater (5:00pm). 

Equipment Requirements: helmet (Harding provides), shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, cup, mouthpiece (would be smart to keep extras in gym bag), cleats, lacrosse stick- *if your son plans on buying a new stick, please get a mesh pocket

Baseball

Practice Info:  Baseball will practice at the HWY 70 baseball field from 3pm-4:45pm daily.  You may pick up your son at HWY 70 at 4:45pm or he will need to be picked up by 5:00pm in the Depot.  Practice will begin the week of February 11 for anyone not involved with the all school musical.  There will be no practice on Thursday, February 14 or Friday, February 15. Those in the play will join the team for practices beginning on Tuesday, February 19.

Equipment:  All players need a glove, white baseball pants (for practice), navy blue baseball socks, baseball spikes (black, white, gray or navy), navy blue sleeves for cold weather games and practices.  All baseball bats must be BBCOR, players may not use BESR bats anymore.  Please contact the Coach Sandwith if you have questions about equipment.
